And here I am:
Syda (pronounced "Syd-uh.").
My art-filled journey:
I discovered art journaling in 2010, and made my first page on my 45th birthday. I took my first online course in 2011. I had no idea what I was doing, and to be quite honest, most days I still have no idea what I am doing. But I love mixed media and have no idea how I managed my life without it.
My artful journey has taken a lot of left turns. I started out as Kreative Notions. I wanted to uplift the world. I needed uplifting. At the time, I was doing a lot of rubber-stamping and card making and adding inspiring words to photographs. Mistaeks were mandatory. They still are.
Kreative Notions served me well, but the time came when it didn't fit me anymore. It was time to move on. I had changed. My creative outlet changed…or rather, expanded. Life is messy. Art heals. Add color + stir.
Why the Motley Turtle?
I had a childhood friend whose father called me Myrtle the Turtle. By the time I was a teenager, I wasn’t very fond of the nickname. As I grew older it became an endearing memory and I began to collect turtles. I am an introvert by nature and turtles are master introverts. I googled The Painted Turtle and got a hit, so off to the thesaurus I went. I decided on Motley; having great variety/having many colors.
What I do:
My activities include art journaling. I always start with paint, but I also love dipping charcoal pencils in water, gluing on bits of paper to create texture, using molding or fiber paste, and making scribbles. I have a lot of inks I am compelled to splatter too.
I enjoy collage, doodling, making small books, binding journals, painting desktops, working with paper clay and a variety of other things. For several years I made my own planners.
I have also enjoyed delving into the digital world. It’s a great way to make art without the mess; particularly if you’re away from your supplies or unable to be in your art space. With the advances in applications, the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, it has become a very pleasurable experience. I also enjoy using a note taking app to supplement my analog planner—making a sort of scrapbook of my day-to-day life.
I currently live in Sacramento, CA with my Ice Cream Man and college age daughter. I drink a.lot.of.coffee. I’m pretty sure my head would explode if there wasn’t coffee. I live with (and sometimes suffer with) anxiety & depression. I don’t much like to cook. My favorite dessert is New York Style Cheesecake. I’ll eat bananas, but only if they’re still a little green. I never go barefoot and I can’t stand to hear people chewing.
Thank you. My name is Syda and I am The Motley Turtle.
